Welcome Why Balance Snowmobile &
ATV Crank Assy?
Because ALL have a massive
Unbalance does not increase or decrease with rpm changes. It takes a greater amount of weight to remove unbalance at a smaller radius. For example:
the snowmobile crank radius which is around 2 inches. Centrifugal force produced by unbalance is the force determined by the amount of unbalance in ounce inches or geam inches and the speed of the motor. Centrifugal force is proportional to the square speed of
rotation; that is, if you double the speed, the force goes
up four times. The chart on centrifugal force shows a
1 oz. inch of unbalance at 500 rpm = .44 lbs and then
at 5,000 rpm = 44.3 lbs. Basically, picture a 44 lb bowling ball swinging around 100 times or revolutions
per second, if this centrifugal force is restrained it will
fatigue the attached parts as well as the rotatinig mass.
